not particularly a 420 fan. how many people really sit around waiting for it to be 420 to smoke or need another reason? just go for it. it's not like a catholic waiting for lent to be over so they can get drunk again or something like that. but being that today is the holiday, i figured i might as well give someone something to be hopeful about...
weed will be legal by 2020, probably much sooner.
it is commonly thought that the government would make money in taxes if they just legalized marijuana. so, this makes the pro-legalize side not understand why the government hasn't made it legal years ago and this makes the anti-legalize side continue to stick by their guns that obviously weed is much worse for people than tobacco or alcohol. well, see, the thing is that the government doesn't (A) act timely nor rationally, (B) care about being proactive in anything, much less to help society, and (C) doesn't give one rip about making tax money off weed. while they would make some tax money, they would still have been losing billions, trillions all these years that weed has been illegal.
as i say time and again, all laws are created based on profitability factors, not things like public safety or support. just like everyday people outside of washington dc look at politicians as untouchable, nameless faces in some big building resembling ancient rome, politicians likewise have very little knowledge about commoners and really don't care about anything other than tricking voters into re-electing them. that's it. so, if they can pass a law that makes it look like they care about people, then people get this warm cozy feeling and turn around and vote for the people that pretend to represent them. meanwhile, the law contains small print that only a lawyer can interpret, which works in favor of that type of circle of politicians and lawyers, not to protect average people. that's why i really don't respect any laws. i only follow them enough to keep authorities away.
it has never been any great mystery that marijuana is far more beneficial to society than it is harmful. it has never been any great mystery that legalizing it would make the drug lords less powerful and one more way to stop senseless violence. and it certainly is no great mystery that the government does love to collect taxes, but the government has stood for a long time by not being stupid.
this is like the vegas bookies. a casino can make 10% or whatever on every bet placed and that would still net them a profit. but vegas wouldn't be nearly as gaudy as it is if bets came in even and they collected only a percentage from the winners. so, let's say instead they weight the odds in one direction so everyone bets the same way. then, they can fix the outcome and collect all the money. that's how the mega resort casinos get built, not by collecting 10% here and there.
so what lesson does the government learn from that? the more things are illegal is the more the odds are stacked in the governments favor. for one thing, it's hard to collect a tax on something that someone can grow in their yard. not that the government couldn't figure out a way, but instead of collecting a mere 10%, uncle sam portrays tony montana. the government first makes a killing by dealing the drugs that they got as free schwag from wars in south asia and south america. then, after dishing them to suppliers, they can track where those drugs go down the line and then bust the people that aren't playing the game the way they want them to. then they have more of an excuse to collect taxes to fund the criminal justice system and can re-sell confiscated drugs. if that sounds immoral or unethical, then consider that politics! the dirtier you play, the more you win. no one in the world wants to believe things could work that way, which is exactly how things end up working that way. the government is corrupt. that's the bottom line. that should be no shocker to anyone. that's how this ridiculous weed situation has always made sense to me. if you have a better idea, then let's talk.
so, if the government is making a killing dealing drugs, would they ever consider making them legal? well, at least in the case of marijuana, they are running out of cards. to start with, when public demand gets so strong, a few wusses in suits lose control if they don't grant concessions. and it's 2013, the public at large has known for decades that weed is no problem. and now with medical science proving more and more that marijuana can actually be good for people, that gets the public riled up even more. and with the prisons overtaxed as they are, the government has no way to enforce all the ridiculous laws. so the weight is getting heavier.
but the ultimate straw that will break the camel's back will be the fact that it's not profitable anymore. as for weed, the government can't still be making money selling it. half the people i know that smoke weed don't pay for it. they either grow it themselves or know the grower. now there is a situation that the government is feeling all this pressure, so if they concede and make the public back off and return to complacency then the government return to other crooked activity they do when no one is looking. then, with weed legal, users wouldn't be motivated to actually grow it because they aren't trying to dupe the man anymore. instead, stoner mentality will kick in that it is just easier to go to a smoke shop or convenience store and buy some. then, the government will settle for your 10% in taxes, and likely find other ways to run the game in their favor... but at least everyone will be able to smoke weed finally.
