english: capitalization

in english we have a convention of capitalizing letters at the beginning of sentences and certain important words, such as proper names. i can’t stand this convention. i espeically can’t stand that my computer capitalizes many of these words automatically.

i was told (by Panda) that it looks bad, unintelligent or something. but, why does it look bad? to me it looks fine. in fact, i think it look stupid to capitalize so many words. it’s kind of like qwerty keyboards. yes, there may have been a time when it was more important, but it shouldn’t matter anymore. (future blog ~ i want a keyboard in alphabetical order like typewriters once were.) the only reason it would look bad to not capitalize certain words is simply because people are conditioned to seeing those words in that form. or to say that we do it just because that’s the way we have always done it and no one cares to question why. heaven forbid that people have to get used to something new! if people were more questioning of such things maybe we could also have a simple and sensible measuring system that counts by 10s instead of 12s.

sentences already end with a period and a space, i don’t need a capital letter to tell me that a new sentence is beginning. my biggest case in point is the word “i”. why do we capitilize i? we don’t capitalize you, we, he, she or even me or myself. it makes no damn sense to capitilise i. it just makes english speaking culture seem more self-centered. someone once told me that is because “i” is its own one letter word, but “a” is not capitalized, nor do the people that spell “you” as “u” capitilize that. so deal with it, i will not capitilize i, just like i won’t capitilize “kid yoshida.”

maybe when i mention certain people by name, i may use caps if i really like that person and maybe when writing certain acronyms, i will do it for emphasis. but basically don’t expect to read my blogs written in the typical english convention. in fact, i have said before that if i write another book, i will not capitilize.
if you don’t like reading such writing and can provide a compelling reason for why i should capitilize words, beyond that it would make me look more intelligent, please provide such reasoning and maybe i will reconsider. quite obviously i don’t care how i look, but since you are the reader, this is for your eyes. you have a voice and i care. i am not that much of a rabble rouser, just enough of a rabble rouser to question convention. so, that’s wanted i wanted to rant about. now, microsoft word, please stop automatically capitilizing i!
